Speed Awareness

Vehicle Safety

Did you know that speed, or the inappropriate use of speed, is a factor in a significant percentage of road traffic incidents (20% of all fatal collisions). The greater the speed involved the more serious the incident is likely to be.

If you are caught speeding, your details are kept on a database held by the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme. If you’re caught speeding again within three years of taking a speed awareness course, you’re quite likely to receive a fine and penalty points straightaway.

Appropriate speed limits are important for safety and environmental reasons. Speed limits vary according to the type of vehicle you are driving and the nature of the road. You must not exceed the maximum speed limits set for the road and your vehicle.

The simple truth about speeding is: the faster you go, the longer it takes to stop and, if you crash, the harder the impact. Even small increases in speed could have severe consequences. If a pedestrian steps out into the path of an oncoming vehicle which is speeding the difference could be a matter of life or death.

Regular Servicing

It is very important to look after your vehicle also. In an emergency, the average driver takes about 1.5 seconds to react. Stopping  distances increase exponentially the faster you go. A modern vehicle with good brakes and tyres, after braking, is capable of stopping at approximately 7 m/s2.

A dry road that is sealed and level enables good friction between the tyres and the road to help stop the vehicle sooner and on a wet road that is sealed and level has less friction between the tyres and the road which increases the stopping distance of a vehicle.

But what if your vehicle does not have good breaks or tyres? Do you remember the last time that you had your vehicle checked? Car garages like Barrowford MOT are not all about making money off of our customers – We run a “no fix, no fee” policy. We will gladly give your care the once over and advise you if any work needs doing.
