Preparing for an MOT test

  • Barrowford MOT Centre

When your MOT is due this can be a stressful time. You’re hopeful that there are no costly repairs that are needed and now with the added complication of being under lockdown we are all asking the question “Can we actually get our vehicles tested? Do we still need to?” What are the guidelines surrounding this?

Guidelines and preparation checks for MOT

If your MOT expired on or before March 29th then you cannot legally drive or park your vehicle on the road unless you are driving it to be repaired or to a pre-arranged MOT test. You can check the latest information about MOT testing under the current restrictions direct from the UK government here.

There are a few steps that you can take which will increase your chances of passing your MOT, below are the main things that you should check:

Windscreen Wipers

One of the easiest checks is to look over the windscreen wipers for any tears – these are easy enough to replace yourself.

Brake & Headlights

You should always clean your lights before taking the car in for an MOT and check that they all work (you will need someone to help you with this). If they don’t, you will need them replacing to pass the MOT.

Horn

Did you know that not having a correctly working car horn could fail your MOT test? This is the quickest and easiest check to make. you might not always use the horn and be unaware if it wasn’t working but it needs to be.

Engine

You should always make sure that your car is filled with enough engine oil before taking it in for an MOT as you can be turned away without a suitable level.

Tyres

The minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm, you can check this by inserting a 20p coin into the tread – if you are unable to see the outer band then you are within legal limits.

Also check the tyre pressure. This affects braking and steering. This is less important for your MOT but crucial for driving safely.

Barrowford MOT are always available to help

These are the things that you can check before taking a car in for an MOT but it is good practice to carry out maintenance throughout the year so that you can keep the vehicle in good condition. Barrowford MOT are always available to help you with any car maintenance before your MOT should you not be able to do it yourself.
