Car Diagnostics

What are car diagnostics?

Much like when your GP pokes and prods you with an array of instruments to identify any ailments, when you take your car for a service, your mechanic will use a diagnostic tool to see if there are any recorded problems with your car.

Most cars on UK roads today contain an on-board computer known as an Engine Control Unit (ECU) which works non-stop to monitor the performance of our vehicles. Sensors, placed all over the car, report back to the ECU and when an issue is identified – such as engine that is overheating, or low fluid levels – an error code is generated resulting in the corresponding warning light being activated on your dashboard. Whilst a warning light alerts the driver to a problem within the vehicle promoting immediate action, only a diagnostic check can understand and highlight the full extent and primary cause of the problem.

At Barrowford MOT, our first class diagnostic technicians can help stop your dash lighting up like the Nelson Christmas lights, getting you back on your way.

What can diagnostic equipment check for?

It seems fairly straightforward that when a warning light is triggered – say for example your engine light – you are immediately aware of where the issue is within your car. However, an engine is comprised of many parts so without diagnostics, the exact fault is not immediately obvious. At Barrowford MOT, our advanced diagnostic equipment reads the error codes generated by your car’s ECU to provide a full, in-depth explanation of the issue. The car diagnostic test checks for issues across many major systems such as tyres, emissions, lights, air conditioning and engine management. Once errors have been rectified, the equipment can also be used to reset service lights, adjust headlight levels and test braking systems. We can also help identify the causes of misfiring, strange noises, loss of power and even Diesel Particular Filter Blockages (DPF)

How often should you get your car tested using diagnostics?

At Barrowford MOT, we advise you to have a car diagnostics check-up whenever you are worried or concerned about something – no matter how insignificant you think it might be. That way, we can sort it out quickly and get you back in the driving seat avoiding major and costly repairs at a later stage. For most cars however, we recommend a vehicle diagnostic check at least once a year. Testing at Barrowford MOT starts at £35 and we’ll even include a complimentary hot wash and wax!

And finally…

If you see a warning light on your dashboard, please find a safe place to stop your vehicle and call Barrowford MOT on 01282 695351: you’re not just a customer, you’re a neighbour!
